We know that the role of the PE Leader is a wide-ranging one, not just involving subject knowledge, planning, monitoring and leadership; but additional requirements such as Active Learning, Active Lives, Active Travel, District Schools, PE and Sport Premium, School-Club Links, School Games, School Sport Associations and Sports Day.
Support programmes will be led by Kerry Searle, an experienced Teacher and PE Leader in a Primary setting; PE Teacher in a Secondary setting; and School Sport Co-ordinator. In addition, other professionals may be involved in the support programme dependent upon the outcomes required by the school.
The following programmes provide 1:1 school-based mentoring for new PE Leaders or those looking for additional support in the role. A chance to review and reflect upon current provision and plan the future development of PE, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) in a bespoke way for your school. These programmes work alongside additional training opportunities, such as those provided by the Association for PE and The Educational People.
PROGRAMME A - Academic Year Mentoring and Support This six-day school-based mentoring programme (one day per term) will meet specific outcomes agreed with the school in a pre-programme meeting, and could include the following:
PE Leader role and responsibilities
Creating the vision for PESSPA
Implementing the Vision
Monitoring the Impact of the PESSPA plan
Observing and moderating PE lessons jointly
Annual PESSPA Review
PROGRAMME B - Creating the vision for PE, School Sport and Physical Activity One-day school-based support programme to focus on ‘creating the vision for PESSPA’. The opportunity to consider values, aims and priorities for PESSPA within your school; consider how PESSPA aligns to the wider priorities of the school; evaluate strengths and weaknesses of PESSPA provision; discuss additional programmes; and gain insight to the needs of your pupils and targeted groups.
PROGRAMME C - Implementing the Vision & Monitoring the Impact One-day school-based support programme to focus on ‘Implementing the Vision’ & ‘Monitoring the Impact’. The opportunity to develop long-term plans for improvement, including curriculum / skills progression map and provision planner; high quality teaching and learning through a safe provision; and assessment, monitoring and impact evaluation.
PROGRAMME D - Observing and moderating PE lessons jointly One-day school-based support programme to focus on joint lesson observation and moderation. The opportunity to develop skills and gain experience in observing and moderating PE lessons through a joint-working approach.
PROGRAMME E - Annual PESSPA Review One-day school-based support programme to review PESSPA. The opportunity to review, check and challenge the school’s PESSPA provision, impact, and future plans, including the PE & Sport Premium ‘evaluating the impact’ framework.
Other bespoke programmes can be offered in response to specific requests from schools or challenges faced.
Planning for the programmes could begin in Summer Term and invoiced accordingly as professional development is an eligible spend of the PE & Sport Premium. AfPE encourages schools to look for CPD opportunities linked to Physical Education delivery and whole school physically active learning strategies. Schools are encouraged to invest in CPD that aims to address staff motivations and relationships with physical activity rather than just simply upskilling staff in technical aspects of traditional sporting activities.
